How to Choose Wine as a Beginner

Standing in front of a wall of wine bottles and wondering, “Which one should I choose?” With so many different grapes, flavours, prices, and styles, it’s easy to feel confused or unsure about which wine is right for you.

There is no single “Best wine for beginners.”

The right wine depends on your taste, food, occasion, and how adventurous you want to be.

Instead of choosing wine based only on the label or price, consider these five questions.

1. Do You Prefer Red, White, Rosé, or Sparkling?

Start with the broadest category.

If you enjoy fresh and refreshing drinks, try white, rosé, or sparkling wine.

If you prefer richer and deeper flavors, explore red wine.

If you enjoy celebrations and refreshing bubbles, sparkling wine could be a great choice.

There is no requirement to start with red wine simply because it is considered more traditional.

2. Do You Prefer Dry or Sweet?

Before choosing a wine, it helps to understand what “dry” and “sweet” actually mean. In simple terms, they describe how much sweetness you taste in the wine.

Dry wine has little to no noticeable sweetness. It often tastes crisp, fresh, or more structured, making it a popular choice with savoury foods such as grilled meats, seafood, pasta, and cheese.

Sweet wine has more noticeable natural sugar, giving it a sweeter, fruitier taste. Sweet and off-dry wines can be a great choice if you enjoy fruity flavours or want a wine that is easy and approachable to drink.

Think about the beverages you already enjoy.

If you normally prefer sweet cocktails, fruit juice, or sweeter drinks, you may enjoy a fruit-forward or slightly sweet wine.

If you prefer black coffee, sparkling water, dry cocktails, or less-sweet beverages, you may prefer dry wines.

Your existing taste preferences can be a useful starting point.

3. Do You Like Light or Full-Bodied Drinks?

Wine body refers to how heavy or rich a wine feels in your mouth.

Light-bodied wines tend to feel more delicate and refreshing.

Full-bodied wines tend to feel richer, heavier, and more intense.

For example, Pinot Noir is generally considered lighter-bodied than Cabernet Sauvignon.

Similarly, Pinot Grigio can feel lighter and crisper than a rich, full-bodied Chardonnay.

If you are completely new to wine, starting with a lighter or medium-bodied style can make the experience easier.

4. What Food Will You Eat?

Food is one of the best ways to choose wine.

Rather than asking,

“What is the best wine?”

ask:

“What am I eating?”

Wine and food pairing can dramatically change how both the wine and food taste.

5. What Is the Occasion?

The best wine for a romantic dinner may be different from the best wine for a beach gathering or wedding.

Consider whether you are buying wine for:

- Dinner

- A date night

- A birthday

- A wedding

- A villa gathering

- Brunch

- A corporate event

- A poolside occasion

- A gift

- A casual evening at home

Choosing wine according to the occasion can make the decision much easier.
